[tex-live] problem with ../configure --datarootdir=...

    Is patching "configure" itself the right way to approach this? I'd  
    have expected a patch to configure.in or some other "source" file,  

The normal way to support --datarootdir would be to use the latest
version of autoconf to generate configure.  Then you get it for free.

In the case of ncurses, I cheated because using the latest autoconf led
to time-consuming and painful complications.  I'd prefer to just delete
ncurses; I expect dialog could easily use system curses libs, I've just
never felt like testing it, partly because I've never used or cared
about dialog in the first place.  If someone out there would like to try
changing dialog to use system curses instead of the one in TL, that
would be great.
