Okay, the real thing I am doing for this kind of stuff is the following : put
all the environment declarations in one file, say .env, and then source this
file in both .xsession and shell startup files (with a test to prevent
double-loading if you want, or source in only in the startup files for login
shell).

Well, if you like to run the compilation from your favourite editor and it
happens to be a graphical one that you don't run from a shell, you can have
problems too...
