and send me the output? 

Or better, AS ROOT (!!!) (can you switch permanently to root?) and the
full output of that

	c=`kpsewhich -var-value TEXMFSYSCONFIG`
	TEXMFVAR="$v"
	TEXMFCONFIG="$c"
	export TEXMFVAR TEXMFCONFIG
