I should be more explicit, sorry. updmap is a perl script and the
problem occurs in a system call from perl. I'm trying to find out if
there are any differences between XP and w2k in that respect (I can't
reproduce your problem on XP).

Can you run the following command (one line in case it gets wraped by
email software):

  C:\Programme\texlive\2009\tlpkg\tlperl\bin\perl.exe -e "print `call
echo cmdcmdline=^%cmdcmdline^%`;"
