Ok, thanks to all of you, Peter, Ulrike and Norbert.

I have hidden /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-config/web2c/updmap.cfg
temporarily, so that updmap-sys sees the locally configured updmap.cfg 
file. Of course, I know I'll have to check again after every TeXLive 
update, but I can live with this ;-)
