[tex-live] tlmgr error, 'command mpost not found'

Things disappearing unexpectedly can result from disk problems (hardware
errors, power glitches, lack of space).    The first thing to do is
make sure the
filesystem is not corrupted.

You appear to be using MacOSX and MacTeX.  I'm not near a Mac, so I'll
give some
data for ARCH=i386-linux, while you have ARCH=universal-darwin.

$ tlmgr show bin-metapost
Package:    bin-metapost
Category:   TLCore
ShortDesc:  A development of MetaFont that generates PostScript output.
LongDesc:   A tool based on MetaFont for producing precise technical
illustrations, creating scalable PostScript instead of bitmaps.
Installed:  Yes

$ tlmgr show bin-metapost.i386-linux
Package:    bin-metapost.i386-linux
Category:   TLCore
ShortDesc:  binary files of bin-metapost for i386-linux

This information is stored in /usr/loca/texlive/2008/tlmgr/texlive.tlpdb.

You also want to examine /usr/loca/texlive/2008/texmf-var/web2c/tlmgr.log for
entries mentioning metapost.
