Hi Daniel, hi Karl,

I'm reading your discussion with great interest, as I'm having the same
problem.

I'm doing the following steps (after every recreation of the font
database by tlmgr --update):

# create entry in .../texlive/2008/texmf-var/web2c/updmap.cfg:
$ tlmgr generate updmap \
     --localcfg .../texmf-local/web2c/updmap-local.cfg
# recreate the map files
$ updmap-sys --cnffile .../texlive/2008/texmf-var/web2c/updmap.cfg

After these two steps, the fonts from texmf-local are usable.

I don't know, if this is the intended behaviour (I can't believe it),
but this may help for find a way getting around the difficulties.

Best wishes

Jobst
