[tex-live] getnonfreefonts --help

Here's what I get:

TEXMFHOME=/home/nbecker/texmf getnonfreefonts -l
! ERROR: The variable TEXMFHOME is not set.

I am not a tex newb, but I find this _very_ confusing.  What's wrong here?
