Perfect. Really strange that
	kpsewhich --var-value TEXMFHOME
works while
	kpsewhich --expand-path \$TEXMFHOME
doesn't, according to one of your preceding messages.

I can't understand that one, but I think it could be the root of the
present problem.

I don't think it is a shell problem, but just to be sure, how about
	kpsewhich --expand-path '$TEXMFHOME'
?

Now, if really the problem is with --expand-path, and has nothing to do
with the shell, while --var-value works correctly, comparing the output of

KPATHSEA_DEBUG=-1 kpsewhich --var-value TEXMFHOME

and

KPATHSEA_DEBUG=-1 kpsewhich --expand-var \$TEXMFHOME

might be useful.
