[tex-live] problem with fonts -- how do i debug this?

Thank you to everyone who helped with this problem, I found the solution.

I have to apologise, the fault was in an incorrect installation. I installed
a set of encoding files that did not match the version of the fonts I
installed. once i cleared the install and tried again with the correct
version, everything worked /very/ smoothly.
