[tex-live] XeLaTeX with WinEdt in UTF-8 on Windows

Thanks for all the replies. What worked best for my friend was texmaker
as editor, conversion of all the files to UTF-8 via emacs and a custom
batch file for a quick compilation and a custom batch file for a
complete compilation. Batch files were made available with short cut in
the taskbas and had a pause command at the end.
