It's ugly, but perhaps cpio? That gives longer than 100 chars without 
requiring any additional software. Downside is it would be quite a heavy 
change to the installer for a single package, upside is it would be handy 
for platforms with no bundled GNU tar (AIX, for example).

There tends to be an assumption in a lot of open source circles now that 
all the world is Linux/x86/gcc. As I understand it, the kids today see 
using UNIX as a little curmudgeonly.
