sure.  service now suppressed altogether, welcome message amended.

i had thought it wouldn't matter, in the run-up to installing the new
ftp daemon, which doesn't offer the facility in the first place.

you proved me wrong.

it all goes to show -- never leave anything running after you've
provided an alternative way to do the work: someone will find a damaging
way to use it that you had never thought of.
