I don't think that's the case now, at least none of the members of the  
TeX on Mac OS seems to be doing that. We are using either Maxwell's  
TeX Live Utility, or a terminal session or the GUI of tlmgr to update  
our distributions. Koch's MacTeX packaging is been used only for new  
installations.
