Just found the reference (never tested myself): gdm sources quite a lot of files
on startup, by default /etc/profile, ~/.profile, /etc/xprofile and ~/.xprofile,
depending of the configuration in /etc/gdm/Xsession. So probably ~/.profile is a
good place to put our environment declarations if you are a normal user on a
system running gdm.
