You can edit your fontconfig configuration to pick those fonts. e.g.:

$ cat ~/.fonts.conf
<?xml version='1.0'?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
  <fontconfig>
    <dir>/whereever/are/lmodern/fonts</dir>
</fontconfig>
