My main example file for polyglossia indeed uses mainly Libertine. But
as it also showcases Syriac, Arabic, Sanskrit, Thai, Divehi and Amharic,
it has to rely on fonts that are not available in TL. Now I think I will
split this example file in two, with one file using only Libertine, and
another one for all remaining scripts.

DejaVu for one is being actively developed, with releases at regular
intervals.
I don't know about Bera.
