the problem remains, once one has consulted the faq: searching within
the faq is feeble in the extreme, and too often the user just doesn't
know where to look.

also, the knowledge base of the faq is too small: most of the answers
come out of my head, and the world of tex has come a long way since the
days when i believed i knew most of what an informed texie needed to
know.

so, guys & gals, if you see an area that ought to be covered, *please*
mail faq-devel at tex.ac.uk (helps my mail folder manipulation if you don't
mail me direct).

(answer texts are welcome. plain text is fine, even though the faq
itself is written in more than usually inscrutable latex.)
