[tex-live] German characters stopped PDF generating

Thanks for the hint.  Now I changed INPUT_ENCODING/OUTPUT_ENCODING to
ISO-8859-1, then I get another error:

After I pressed ENTER after the '?' to skip the error several times,
the pdflatex process finally still failed, and ended in:
