MacTeX 2009 includes ghostscript.  There should be /usr/local/bin/gs.
Maybe it wasn't installed, or
maybe your PATH is missing /usr/local/bin.   If gs is missing,  you
can find the ghostscript
package inside the MacTeX .mpkg and try installing.

and their status.  In N. America,
repository=http://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlnet has been good
from the far corner here
in Nova Scotia

I suggest changing ownership (chown -R <user>:<group>) of
the texlive trees to some designated TL manager -- tlmgr
and related scripts are a bit much to be trusted with root privs.

I've managed to get this working a couple times in TL2008, but it is
fragile and seems to break when Xquartz is updated.  MacTeX has
yet another GUI, but I don't use it.
