Victor,

Thanks for the pointer to xz. If the currently broken link to lzma on 
the Tex-Live site had been replaced by a link to xz, I would not have 
had any problems. As it was, I was   Googling for lzma source to get to 
square one on Tex-Live, and not being too impressed by what I managed to 
find. xz is very easy to build, by contrast. (I didn't notice that you 
were providing prebuilt lzma executables, and I wanted in any case to 
see what I was getting into before running a binary executable on my 
machine).

On the other hand, the Tex-Live network install script works extremely 
well, once I accept the warm smothering embrace of full automation.
