Thanks all for the comments. I have developed something of a compromise, which will work for most users and does not require any changes to how TL or Asymptote do their thing. Read on if you're interested in what that solution is.

My installation script lets the Asymptote makefile do its thing, installing the asymptote.sty file (and others) into TEXMFLOCAL. At this stage, they are currently not found by kpsewhich since the TEXMFDIST files are found earlier. I then symlink the TEXMFLOCAL files into TEXMFHOME for the current user, and spit out a message telling the user that this should be repeated on any other accounts necessary.

When the script is incorporated into the homebrew system, installing Asymptote from source is a matter of running `brew install asymptote` and waiting a few minutes for the compilation.
