As a matter of fact, with the previous install (AucTeX v11.85) I had used ~/texmf in Debian (and ~/Library/texmf in the Mac). But in February, seeing that tlmgr was installing a newer version of preview.sty, I decided to get rid of preview.sty et al. in my personal trees in both OS.

Now ---with Debian installing AucTeX is really simple ---just

./configure
make
make install

and it finds both my build of Emacs (v23.x) and TeXLive. But on the Mac that's not so simple --- configure finds the Emacs shipped by Apple (/usr/bin/emacs, v22.x), instead of my build (v23) in /Applications, and gets confused by the MacTeX mechanism of /usr/texbin, so I have to configure with-emacs, with-lispdir and with-texmf-dir.

Trying to keep both TeXLive distros (Debian and Mac) always the same, I looked into Debian where were the support files installed, and that's when I found AucTeX and tlmgr were installing in different branches.

Best,

Axel
