As you have MacPorts, that means you're using a Mac, in which case I would advise you to install the especial TeXLive distro for the Mac:

It *is* TeXLive with some very convenient additions ---first and foremost, the ``TeX Distribution'' control panel ---courtesy of Gerben Wierda and Jerome Laurens---, which detects which TeX distributions you have installed and allows you to shift from one to another with a simple click; see

read specially the last paragraph, which deals with Fink and MacPorts distros.

MacTeX also comes with some useful applications, like ``TeX Live Utility'', a front-end to TeXLive Manager (tlmgr) to update your TeXLive distribution.

Ah! And it also sets the proper path automatically.
