Yes, this works fine: it's very quick then and it does not cause the  
OSX firewall to twitch.  I'd actually worked out in the meantime that  
it must be using Net::FTP and there are configuration options for that  
which control passive/non-passive ftp (see http://perldoc.perl.org/Net/FTP.html)

Sorry, but that's just wrong. It is not strange at all that firewalls  
are configured so they do not allow in *anything* that is not  
explicitly required (not to mention you don't need a firewall to break  
traditional ftp - NAT is enough).
