I decided to do a clean reinstall, and found another totally
minor glitch:

* pressing 'Cancel' during install aborts tlmgr, with this on
the terminal:

[taco at ntg install-tl-20100531]$ Installing [001/389, time/total:
??:??/??:??]: ae [56k]
Installing [002/389, time/total: 00:00/00:00]: aeguill [3k]
Installing [003/389, time/total: 00:01/56:19]: amscls [33k]
Installing [004/389, time/total: 00:02/01:11:56]: amsfonts [3700k]
Installing [005/389, time/total: 00:09/07:47]: amsmath [30k]
Installing [006/389, time/total: 00:10/08:35]: antp [137k]
Installing [007/389, time/total: 00:11/09:07]: antt [4596k]
Installing [008/389, time/total: 00:19/07:17]: apalike [8k]

Tk::Error:
  ("after" script)
[taco at ntg install-tl-20100531]$

It happily restarts afterwards, so again this is just cosmetics.

But to end with very good news: after initial TL installation
is finished

   $ texexec hello
   $ texexec --xetex hello
   $ context hello
   $ luatools cont-en.tex
   $ mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern=iwona\*
   $ pstopdf test.ps

All work out of the box (with suitable test files, of course), no
manual user configuration needed at all.

Also, the 'metafun' command is deleted (as it should be), 'context'
writes the luatex cache in ./.texlive2010/texmf-var/luatex-cache (like
it should), and 'texexec' no longer tries to call mpost via \write18
but instead runs mpost in between run (like it should).

Signing happily,
Taco
