To put things into perspective, my installation is ca. 600 MB.  It
contains many of the packages that you listed plus some others that I
use (I only install what I use).  How useful my selection would be for
a beginner, I don't know.  But I don't think that the installation
size should be the focus when beginners are concerned, I agree on that
with Reinhard.

Please do.  It will be much more productive to talk in more concrete
terms, especially if you will also have some personal experiences to
share.
