while this is a potential problem, it's not one that's bitten any of my
users.

sure; this is a given in any discussion in this area.
the most recent occurrence i had, was that a user had tried to use
mathptmx and failed. finding that is pretty trivial ... now that i know
how to look ... but given that psnfss hasn't been updated in years, the
one thing it definitely _wasn't_ was an outdated package issue.
