Hi Karen,

first of all, I guess the build thing is now resolved.

> file directly to PDF (i.e. pdftex), but I need vertical writing and UTF-8, which forces me to use uptex, and there is no such thing as "uppdftex". For testing right now, I wish I could "see" the test dvi somehow to know that uptex worked okay - I looked through

Do you use my tlptexlive repository?
http://tutimura.ath.cx/ptexlive/?tlptexlive%A5%EA%A5%DD%A5%B8%A5%C8%A5%EA
There you should get updates to most programs, plus pxdvi which allows you to see the dvi file generated.

> dvi2tty: Id-byte is not correct: 3

the dvi generated by (u)p(la)tex are not normald dvi files, the have some additional fields. Tha's why there is pxdvi. dvipdfmx already supports these specialities.

I assume you are fluent in Japanese, but even if not, you can post questions specific to Japanese TeX to the TeX Q&A, either the old style list type
http://oku.edu.mie-u.ac.jp/~okumura/texfaq/qa/
or the new style forum
http://oku.edu.mie-u.ac.jp/tex/

In any cases, asking me should also work for most things

All the best

Norbert
