HKCU:
  %userprofile%/NTUSER.DAT

HKCU\Software\Classes (file associations) are in a separate file:
  %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat
%localappdata% is an environment variable in w8 and maybe earlier,
and corresponds to the registry value
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\
      \Explorer\User Shell Folders\Local AppData
    and may have the value
      %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data
    or
      %userprofile%\AppData\Local
HKLM:
  %SystemRoot%/System32/config/system
    for the system hive
  %SystemRoot%/System32/config/software
    for the software hive
and other extension-less files in the same directory
