This is not a good idea.  The standard way to suppress a leading dot
recognized as a request start character is to precede it with the
zero-width escape, `\&'.

So the patch should rather read

> -... resp. \fBdvips\fR \fI-Pbuiltin35\fR ... to either download the LW35 fonts resp. use the
> +\&... resp. \fBdvips\fR \fI-Pbuiltin35\fR ... to either download the LW35 fonts resp. use the
