A nice wrapper around pktrace (or autotrace) is mftrace:

  http://lilypond.org/mftrace/

The authors claim that it is quite similar to textrace, but quicker
and easier to install.

This program has been used by LilyPond before I've converted
its Metafont sources to cooperate with mf2pt1 instead.
