[tex-live] Purge backup files manually

Dear developers,

a simple one-word answer yes/no would be totally sufficient. I just want
to make sure that I don't break the system.

Q: Is it safe to delete files from backupdir manually, i.e. by tools
other than tlmgr?

Background: I'd like to purge backup files based on age/filedate
("delete files older than ... days"). My philosophy on this: If no bug
popped up after 2 months of heavy usage then I'm almost certain that I
don't need the backup.
