It may be even more complex because page breaking is an asynchronous
operation. In the simplest case of a page containing text only the
paragraph is broken to lines and the lines are inserted to the main
vertical list. If the main vertical list is higher that the page
height, the page is completed and sent to the output device. The rest
is returned back to the main vertical list. It may happen that
everything fits on the page so that after the page break the main
vertical list will be empty. The result is that just by looking at the
file it is very difficult to predict whether the main vertical list
will be empty or not.
