You got a point there. Most Windows users would never test via the CLI and most user expect no difference in behaviour when double clicking on a file compared to opening a file via 'Open file'

I do have a virtual win 7, but it is not connected via UNC paths, so I test via one of our users.

Except that maybe the error encountered by my students (not by me: I
don't own Windows), who were also using TeXstudio, is not present if
TeXstudio is started from the command line, or if the file is opened
via the 'Open file' item.

Unfortunately, I can't test it right now.
