Not only macros which are not recognized by XeLaTeX can cause trouble
but also non-Unicode characters.  The auto-generated files have to be
removed in any case, even if you are using inputenc on 8-bit engines
and switch from latin1 to utf8.

If the TeX file contains \verb or the verbatim environment it's
advisable not to activate Ligatures=TeX for typewriter fonts.
