that is also strange ...

I did an update -all today and that removed the powerdot package.
Inspecting the .tar.xz I saw the texmf-dist directory, and 
in the same way restoring it worked out without any problems.

I have no idea why the backup you had did no contain the texmf-dist
prefix.

If you can reproduce it, that would be interesting.
