It doesn't, no: it start mf, does nothing and wait. It doesn't 
understand that \mode:=$MODE; mag:=$MAG; nonstopmode; is one argument, 
not several.

Even if I remove the spaces, it doesn't help... I really think quotes 
are necessary...
