Why don't you simple call something like linkdest, abspat, pwd or whatever your scripting language is to fix this in your scripts?

Isn't that the simplest case?

If *you* want to create something permanent from a program output in .../texlive/2013/bin/arch/ which works even after you are not using this dir any more, then please fix your scripts?

In perl it is a trivial call to abs_path (afair), in shell it is readlink or pwd, etcetcetc.

Very *very* easy and simple solution!
