the catalogue dtd shows (probably not rigorously) how the field is to be
used.  it even has a list of "2-letter languages".

tbh, i'm not actually sure whether i've put "ja" or "jp", but i've not
checked old entries, and i don't remember when i started going to a
w'pedia page for the tables.
