[tex-live] TL 13 -- how many maintained installations are there?

i can't imagine such a mechanism provoking the slightest issues of that
sort, except that it would probably be blocked by many firewalls.

however, most sys-admins get the occasional complaint from users/other
sys-admins/isps ... about unexplained traffic from machines they manage.
it would be sad to be provoking yet more of these alerts, on top of
everything else.  of course, we all have to recognise micro$oft's calls
home, as it is, but we _have_ to keep an eye on such traffic, for fear
of missing an infected machine.

on top of this, a large proportion of users (of mine, at least) use the
tex live installed as part of their linux system installation, and i
doubt we're going to get those installations informing us.

i would find the information, thus garnered, interesting, but i doubt
it's going to be practical to get it working.  partial information isn't
going to help, imo.
