If you replace the directory by a list of directories in TEXMFHOME or
TEXMFLOCAL and install files yourself in these trees, there shouldn't
be any problems.  If there is an installer script, maybe written by
someone else, it might be confused if the target is a list rather than
a single path.  I had to adapt getnonfreefonts when someone asked me
to add support lists too.

If there are scripts which assume that the variables expand to single
paths, something like TEXMFPROJECT might be safer.
