TeX Live does not expose any fonts to FontConfig or similar font
managers at all, so it is up to the user to expose only fonts he is
interested in, IMHO.

Apart from the way the splines are represented, TrueType-flavoured
OpenType fonts are capable of anything the CFF-flavoured one are capable
of.
