have many thanks for your solution, and sorry for bothering the list.
Admittedly i had already tried your fix and had talked with Tobias
Oetiker upstream who kindly offered to do that very change, so far so
good. However then i got curious since the effect pointed away from the
style file to something magic going on with this \write, which i didn't
understand, and i wasn't clear about any possibly obscure side effects
of removing these \hskip\z@ (maybe all of them) which must have been
there for something, and for quite some time i guessed. Sorry for the
extra loop and have many thanks again for your help!
