I have not tried: I copied all produced binaries to my TL2015 tree.
I then had to recreate all formats.
Seems to work fine, I could compile my test file

For switching to a complete distribution there is no need adjusting
the texbin symlink itself.
What one does on Mac OS is to add suitable things to /Library/TeX/Distributions
(actually one does not do anything, the MacTeX guys do it, but here I am
being adventurous)
ttys000:~ (11:33)$ ls -al /Library/TeX/Distributions/
total 64
drwxr-xr-x 13 ??? wheel 442 13 avr 08:57 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 ??? wheel 238 28 jui 2014 ..
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 13 avr 10:30 .DefaultTeX
drwxr-xr-x 8 ??? wheel 272 28 jui 2014 .FactoryDefaults
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 7 sep 2012 Fink-teTeX.texdist
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 7 sep 2012 MacPorts-TeXLive.texdist
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 7 sep 2012 MacPorts-teTeX.texdist
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 28 jui 2014 Programs
-rw-r--r-- 1 ??? wheel 31302 7 sep 2012 TeXDist-description.rtf
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 7 sep 2012 TeXLive-2012.texdist
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 20 jui 2013 TeXLive-2013.texdist
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 28 jui 2014 TeXLive-2014.texdist
drwxr-xr-x 3 ??? wheel 102 13 avr 09:01 TeXLive-pre2015.texdist
The TeXLive-pre2015.texdist is a collection of symlinks, I copied them
from TeXLive-2014.texdist and changed the destinations in an emacs dired buffer
The choice of distribution is then done via small utility
which changes only ONE link:
ttys000:~ (11:41)$ ls -l /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX
total 8
lrwxr-xr-x 1 ??? wheel 35 13 avr 10:30 Contents -> ../TeXLive-pre2015.texdist/Contents
As for GUI tool, the one I use on Mac OS is TeX Live Utility,
it works well with the above set-up.
I have configured it to use a http TL2015 pretest mirror as home,
Currently it just says "no updates available", naturally as I did
the rsync + tlinstall this morning.
>From now on I think I will be able to use it to update the TL2015 pretest
(including binaries). There will be no need for using directly tlmgr
(and I can trash my rsync'ed mirrored pretest tree)
Once TL2015/MacTeX is released I will only need to reset the default repository
in TeX Live Utility to http://mirror.ctan.org/systems/texlive/tlnet
best,
Jean-François
