[tex-live] TeTeX in TeX Live 2015 broken on Mac

The above test does not seem to work for XeTeX in TeX Live 2014.  For
the following (complete) test file :

\ifnum\XeTeXcountvariations\font>0\fi\bye
abcd
\end

no output is produced.  I would expect "abcd" to be typeset.
