Some scripts test whether they are called via a symlink, if they
need to find auxiliary files. Copying would not be good in such a
situation.

I have had a udf-formatted usb stick for a while, but now and then
it would get pathologically slow. I thought the usb stick might be
failing, but after reformatting as vfat it was fine. This was under
Linux.
