That is a *very* good idea. The reason for many people having the
.md format is github and similar services, which render markdown README.md
files as the main page of a project.

So having only one README.md is a good thing in my opinion.

Not that I am aware of. We do not use extensions or this kind of stuff
for testing. If the file is properly tagged in the TeX Catalogue as
documentation file (as it is done already now), then the changes
will be reflected in the tlpdb automatically.

So *from*my*side* there is a full "go ahead!*
