Good point, that's to be added to the debate...

I admit I didn't have this use case in mind...

What about

CLUAINPUTS =
$SELFAUTOLOC/lib/{$architecture,}/{$progname,$engine,}/lua//

?

(I don't know if "$architecture" exists, if not I think this would be
something to create, also I'm not totally sure this would expand the way
I think it would).
