[tex-live] xetex problem?

Howdy,

Someone mentioned this problem for LuaLaTeX but I'm seeing the same thing with XeLaTeX. Compiling the following MWE with XeLaTeX shows the problem:

\documentclass{article}
%\usepackage{fontspec}
\begin{document}
\(A=B=C\)
\end{document}

If you un-comment the fontspec line all seems to be well. This is with TeX Live 2015 and all updates.
